Guiffbfdian OO 1f Gifford Leaving Guilford BY PATTOWNSEND Dr. Jim Gifford will be head ing east at the end of the semester. Duke University will be gaining a new medical history professor and Guilford will be suffering in the loss. His new title will be Duke University Associate Professor of Medical History in the Duke University Medical School. Dr. Gifford spoke candidly about the pros and cons of his decision, but the overriding factor in the case was that at Duke he will be able to devote his entire teaching time to a subject he loves the history of medicine. He will be teach ing one course per term to the graduate level medical students, and one course two semesters in length to undergrads. College Union Elections BY ELLEN POLLOCK Elections for College Union will be held on April 7. Be a full-time student (carry 12 credit hours). 2. Have maintained a 2.0 QPA (cumulative). 3. Have been a full time student at Guilford for one semester. 4. Not be on restricted probation at the time of petit ioning for candidacy. 5. Be of junior or senior standing. They must include the signature of the President or Co-president, as well as ten signatures of current Guilford students who support your candidacy. Any exemptions to the above requirements must be petitioned to SAC Advisory Board. An SAC meeting will be tentatively set for In addition to his teaching, Jim will receive the title of Assistant University Archivist, with special responsibility to the Medical School. In effect, he will be building the Medical School's archives, a job for which he is well-suited, combining this work with the research he is conducting for his medical history book. Jim Gifford came to Guilford from Duke in 1968, while completing his Doctoral disser tation on American Social and Intellectual History. At Guilford he found a quality not seen in the 31 other colleges he considered "a freedom unparalleled the freedom to teach and to learn in the idealistic sense of those terms." Wednesday, March 30 to consider any reasonable requests for exemption. If you or your co-president will be requesting this consideration, please turn in your petition to the Information Desk no later than noon, March 29. Your petition for candidacy should be accompanied by a written statement explaining your request and the reasons why you feel exemption should be given. All SAC decisions will be final. Contact Elwood Parker, Chairman of SAC, or the elections committee if you have any questions concerning this procedure. There will be no exemp tions from deadlines, so be prompt! Students will be given a chance to meet and talk with Union candidates on Wednes day, March 30 at 7:30 p.m. in an informal meeting in the Student Office Suite on the second floor of Founders Hall. The only elective position in the College Union is President or Co-president. All other positions are appointed. Elections Committee, Dr. Gifford made his choice to go back to Duke on the basis of enthusiasms the job description offered too many irresistable challenges. In leaving Guilford he will be leaving the personal freedom for the impersonal bureaucracy of the larger school, and this he regrets. We regret losing him, too. Last semester I was lucky enough to be in the History of U.S. Medicine course team taught by Dr. Gifford and Dr. Robert Bryden of the Biology Department. It was a most stimulating and involving class, both in the classroom and out, highlighted by dynamic lectures and two most unusual field trips (a morning trip to an autopsy, and a day-long trip to Duke University Medial Center)! Our learning experiences were very valuable. This was made obvious in the outstandingly high ratings received by both professors on the teacher evaluation sheets. Our class was only the second time that Drs. Gifford and Bryden had taught the course together, and it is unfortunate that it was the last. In getting one-half of the "dynamic duo," I hope the Duke students will be decisively appreciative of their new professor! a£*************** Applications for the position * of editor of the Quaker, Piper, * *and Guilfordian are now J being accepted.
